The engine began to make a horrible noise mid drive. The sound resembled throwing a jar of coins into a laundry machine.
At first thought you would think something mechanically broken inside the motor but further inspection found the head gasket had blown, and the spot the gasket failed caused two cylinders to share compression. And remember than horrific rattling noise? That was what we call “detonation” or “pinging”. It is the result of the air fuel mixture igniting before the piston reaches top dead center.
In this case, the seal that separates two adjacent cylinders failed, causing the air fuel mixture to go where it didn’t need to be. We replaced the head gasket and this classic is back on the road!
