Valve Lifters are the Achilles heel of the Chevrolet V8s. They are supposed to compress then spring back into the uncompressed position.

In the last photo you will see a side by side comparison of a good lifter(left) and a stuck lifter(right). Typically the symptom of a stuck lifter is a ticking noise on a cold start. In extreme cases the ticking noise can persist after start up, and be accompanied by a misfire.

Neglecting a bad valve lifter will cause irreversible cam shaft and engine damage.
